Homemade Eyeliner

Did you know that you can make your own eyeliner out of activated charcoal!? It looks just like normal eyeliner & lasts just as long as well. My mother has had skin cancer on her eyelid, so I have been interested in finding an alternative to normal chemical - laden makeup. The only downside is that you are limited on color options since activated charcoal is only black. Slight bummer since my favorite eyeliner color is peacock blue. Oh well, I will still wear my blue every once in a while : ). Here is what you do to wear this as eyeliner....

Take a capsule of activated charcoal (which is good to have on hand anyways for tummy aches & more) & break it into a clean container with lid. Then simply dip a damp eyeliner brush into the charcoal & swipe on. It's that easy! No one will ever know the difference unless you tell them.

Homemade Body Oil

This is a great way to moisturize your skin.

4 oz jojoba oil
4 oz apricot kernel oil
40 drops Lavender essential oil
20 drops Neroli essential oil
20 drops Sandlewood essential oil

Combine all, storing in airtight container. Roll gently to combine. Do not shake.

Coconut Oil & Sugar Body Scrub

This is my newest creation. You will love, love, love the smell combination of these essential oils together. It is heavenly!

1 part virgin coconut oil - 1/4 cup
2 parts sugar or salt (sugar for normal to dry skin or salt for oily skin) - 1/2 cup
about 15 drops Young Living Sandlewood essential oil
about 10 drops Young Living Lavender essential oil
about 10 drops Young Living Neroli essential oil

Place the coconut oil (it will be solid like shortening) in a bowl & add the sugar. Drop the essential oils in & mash everything together with the back of a spoon. Mash & mix until well combined. Store in about a 4 -6 oz size jar with lid.
Rub onto dry skin & rinse in bath or shower.

Homemade Face Cream

My face is so thankful that I discovered this recipe from Elliot Homestead. It will make your face greasy so I use it only at night before bed.

Things to love about this stuff:

It is much, much, much more economical than store bought face cream
It is made with natural, healthy ingredients
No toxic chemicals and words that I cannot pronounce going onto my skin
It really does make your skin feel as soft as a baby's bottom

Homemade Face Cream

1 Tb coconut oil (seriously how did I ever live without this stuff..I use it for everything!)
3 Tb shea butter
2 drops of tea tree oil aka melaleuca oil (I use Young Living for all my essential oils)

Basically you just smash all ingredients together with a spoon and mix well. Store in a jar with tight fit lid. I think this amount fit into a small 2 oz jar that I purchased from Mountain Rose Herbs. I also buy my coconut oil and shea butter from there. Tea tree oil is antiseptic and antimicrobial which is wonderful, but if it irritates your skin simply try a different essential oil such as lavender.

Homemade Essential Oils Hair Growth Spritzer For Women

This formula really stimulates hair growth including new hair growth. It really does work! I have seen my hair grow in noticeably thicker since using it for a few months now. I think it smells fantastic as well. I am a distributor for Young Living brand essential oil and highly recommend them for purity and superior quality. I found the recipe here. The recipe included here is for women, but there is one for men too at the link.

Here is what you need to make a small spritzer bottle like this (I used a spray bottle that came in a toiletries travel bag):

4 oz fractionated coconut oil (I didn't have this so I used V6, which is a carrier blend that does include fractionated coconut oil, from young living)
8 drops Lavender
8 drops Rosemary
8 drops Ylang Ylang
8 drops Clary Sage

Place the carrier oil & all essential oils in a spray bottle. Shake before use. I wash my hair every other day & since this makes my hair very oily, I use it at night before bed only on the days that I know I will need to wash my hair the next day anyways. It will make your pillow greasy too, so if you like, cover it with a towel. Let me know if you try this!

I really like my dining room hutch. It is basically just a re-purposed television cabinet that I painted and filled with kitchen appliances such as my dehydrator, electric griddle and toaster oven. I love that those items are handy, but tucked away instead of cluttering my counter tops.

Slow Cooker Butter Beef With Noodles

I just had to share this recipe with you that I posted on my food blog today. : )

This is one of the most delicious recipes we have tried in a long time! The preacher man I am married to : ) raved and raved. Last night I browned the stew meat in some oil and seasoned with Adobo seasoning and Worcestershire sauce, threw in the slow cooker with other ingredients and lunch was practically ready for us after church. All I had to do when we got home was cook the egg noodles and steam some veggies to eat on the side.

SLOW COOKER BUTTER BEEF WITH NOODLES

3 lbs cubed beef stew meat
1/2 cup butter
Homemade dry onion soup mix which is equal to 1 store bought package
1 tsp beef base like "Better Than Boullion" brand (you could probably use beef granules or cube instead)
Oil for browning meat
Worcestershire sauce, optional
Adobo seasoning, optional
Mushrooms, totally optional (I threw in a small can but if you had fresh that would be even yummier)

Preheat your crock pot (on low) since you will be adding hot food to it. If you don't it can cause cracks to develop. Heat oil in a cast iron skillet over high enough heat to give a nice brown crust to the meat. Throw meat in & toss around for just a few mins. You don't want to cook through, you're just trying to seal in the juice & give it a nice flavor. While browning sprinkle some Adobo seasoning & splash on some worcestershire (optional). Instead of Adobo & worcesterhsire you could season with salt & pepper or other favorite season blend of your choice. Throw meat & juices from browning into preheated crock pot. Throw in your butter, dry onion soup mix & mushrooms if using. Cover & cook on low overnight or about 8 hours. If you get a chance stir a time or two. In the morning turn to keep warm setting. Serve over cooked egg noodles. Top with sour cream if you like although it doesn't need it to be amazing.

Homemade Play Dough

Play Dough Recipe

1 cup flour
1 cup water
a few drops food coloring
1/2 cup salt
1 Tb oil
2 tsp cream of tartar

Mix together all ingredients in a saucepan. Heat ingredients at medium until the mixture just starts to cook, stirring while it heats. When it is done it should form a ball & look like sticky play dough.
Dump the dough out onto a floured surface & let cool enough to handle. Knead it by pushing it down & away from you & folding it over, until you have a smooth dough.
Now Play! Store in a ziplock.

In November we celebrated Joshua's 8th birthday. I cannot believe it's been 8 years! It's so cliche, but seriously, where did the time go?

He chose to have his party at church with our Wednesday night crowd. For the party I made chipotle chili dogs, baked artichoke dip, & of course a birthday cake.

I am so thankful to God for my precious son! He is such a blessing to us!

Homemade Vanilla Extract

This post on Passionate Homemaking inspired me to make homemade vanilla extract for Christmas gifts this year. It was an easy, fun & amazingly fragrant project to work on this cozy fall day.

I ordered these cute 4 oz recycled glass jars with cork lids & organic vanilla beans from mountainroseherbs.com. Got the jug of vodka at the local liquor store for $15.00.

You will need scissors to cut down the middle of the bean. Then snip into about 1-2 inch pieces & stick inside your jar. Afterwards fill with vodka or rum. Let steep for 8 weeks before using for full flavor. When you run out you may pour more alcohol over the same beans for another batch!

And here is the final product. Aren't they cute? I will make some cute gift tags for them before gifting. Another cute idea would be to attach a recipe using the vanilla.

God is Good Even When...?

Recently a friend of mine gave birth to a new baby & she was explaining to me that the labor was tough, but "God is good & he got here safe". Of course my friend didn't do anything wrong by attributing a successful labor to God's goodness & of course I agree with her. But, this brought up a question I continue to be faced with.

Would God have been good if he had not arrived safely?

Of course I know the truth. The correct answer to that question is yes, God is good all the time. Regardless of what happens or doesn't happen.

You rarely hear anyone say, "God is good! My husband/wife died in a car accident today."
Or "God is good! My child was just brutally attacked & killed by a nutso."

I want to be the kind of believer that can say with all my heart that I know my Lord is good no matter what happens. I'm not there right now, but I want to be. I believe with my intellect that the Word is true when it says He is good all the time. But sometimes my heart has trouble trusting the fact. Somehow time, experiences & no doubt satan has tricked me into believing that God is unjust & my heart isn't safe with Him. I pray that he breaks down those strongholds & restores my faith in the truth that God is good. All the time.

First day of Homeschool 2011

Today was back to "home"school for us. We started a new curriculum called Accelerated Christian Education or ACE. We are loving it's structure & pace. We have set up some great incentives for good behavior, doing chores without being reminded, good attitudes & eating their daily fruits & veggies. If they get no strikes all school year, it's a trip to Great Wolf Lodge. If they get more than 3 strikes per week, it's trouble! To God be the glory ~ great things He will do this year!!!

WHEN ALL MEANS FAIL

To believe when all means fail is exceedingly pleasing to God and is most acceptable. Jesus said to Thomas, “You have believed because you have seen, but blessed are those that do believe and have not seen” (John 20:29).

Blessed are those who believe when there is no evidence of an answer to prayer—who trust beyond hope when all means have failed.

Someone has come to the place of hopelessness—the end of hope—the end of all means. A loved one is facing death and doctors give no hope. Death seems inevitable. Hope is gone. The miracle prayed for is not happening.

That is when Satan’s hordes come to attack your mind with fear, anger, overwhelming questions: “Where is your God now? You prayed until you had no tears left. You fasted. You stood on promises. You trusted.”

Blasphemous thoughts will be injected into your mind: “Prayer failed. Faith failed. Don’t quit on God—just do not trust him anymore. It doesn’t pay!”

Even questioning God’s existence will be injected into your mind. These have been the devices of Satan for centuries. Some of the godliest men and women who ever lived were under such demonic attacks.

To those going through the valley and shadow of death, hear this word: Weeping will last through some dark, awful nights—and in that darkness you will soon hear the Father whisper, “I am with you. I cannot tell you why right now, but one day it will all make sense. You will see it was all part of my plan. It was no accident. It was no failure on your part. Hold fast. Let me embrace you in your hour of pain.”

Beloved, God has never failed to act but in goodness and love. When all means fail—his love prevails. Hold fast to your faith. Stand fast in his Word. There is no other hope in this world.

Funny Things Said Recently

Braeden was up before Joshua one time this last week (highly unusual) & when Joshua rose & saw him already up he asked why he got up so early. Braeden replied, "Because I was thinking about black widows & ticks". I just didn't expect that answer & had a good laugh.

My friend Tammy taught my boys Sunday School class this morning & she told me that Joshua said, "You know, I really don't have a problem with money. I don't even really want it & that's kindda weird for a kid my age." LOL

A few months ago I was shopping for new bras & Braeden picked one up & said to Jonathan, "These are kinda like sling shots, dad".

A sign our family watches too much Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives videos...Joshua took a bite of something & said, "Oh man, that's money!"

Boys, Chickens & Uncles...Oh My!

Today I heard my husband yell out the door our children, "Don't ever try to pee on the chickens again!"

Also today six year old Joshua said, "Timmy (his uncle) sure reads the Bible alot....he changed from playing video games alot to reading the Bible alot, hugh?" My brother Timothy has been staying with us this week and they have taken notice of his new lifestyle...what a great example uncle Timmy is being to his nephews!!!

Josh's Kindergarten Update

Joshua is starting to read more & more. I am still very impressed with Horizon's K Phonics curriculum. It's great!

As I have mentioned before, "my little math lover" completed Math-U-See Primer in the fall & book 1 of Horizon's K Math. Now we are on book 2 of Horizon's K Math. It is a good math curriculum as well & I love the variety Joshua has received by doing both curriculum's.

I am content with this first official year of homeschooling. I feel like he has learned way more than the typical kindergarten age child. I don't say that to brag on myself, because it has certainly been in spite of me. I am not a gifted teacher by any means, but that is the beauty of homeschooling & the quality of the curriculum. More than that it is the grace of God to equip me to do what He called me to do & bless what I obey Him in.

Other than math & phonics we still do Bible (the most important thing we study!) as well as work on memory verses. I also read 2 or more children's books to them each day. Braeden joins us for these things.

Jonathan and I are looking forward to attending our first homschool convention in OKC this summer. This will be a neat time to get away as a couple and prayerfully focus on our goals, convictions & curriculum choices for the next grade year.

Homeschool Curriculum Chit-Chat

If you are new to homeschooling, here are my picks for curriculum as well as a few books & websites related to homeschooling that I like. I wrote all of this up for a friend who is considering homeschooling & it inspired me to share it on my blog as well.

A book I recommend highly is Heart of Wisdom by Robin Sampson. http://www.heartofwisdom.com/ Fabulous book!!! I think they may have it on e-book which would be cheaper.

This website is a great resource for curriculum reviews etc. http://www.cathyduffyreviews.com/

http://www.christianbook.com/ is a great place to buy some curriculum at cheaper prices. They have a lot of sales all the time.

Math U See is my favorite for math. It has a teaching DVD that shows you & your child what lesson you will be doing that day & how to do the subject covered. It has blocks that are great for hands on/visual learning. I think you can request a free dvd to see if you would like it. We did a few years ago, but I don't know if they still offer that. You can buy some of the teacher's manuals & manipulatives as new or used items cheaper sometimes on ebay. http://www.mathusee.com/default.php?language=Oklahoma

I also like Horizon's for math by Alpha Omega Publishing. It can be purchased at cbd.com or your local Christian book store in the homeschooling section.

For History I plan to use this when they are in about 3rd grade or so http://www.themysteryofhistory.com/ It is chronological & you learn on a timeline. The cool thing about it is that you see that Cleopatra for example was alive at the time Jesus was born (or something like that). In other words it ties in the history you would learn in the public school text books with Biblical timeline. Very cool!

For phonics & reading I finally found something for my six year old that we like & he is finally learning to read. It's called Horizon's http://www.aophomeschooling.com/horizons/overview.php You can buy it at Mardel's Christian Bookstores in your local area or cbd.com.

For Bible I really like http://www.grapevinestudies.com/ You draw stick figure illustrations on a white board for the little ones as you teach the Bible story. It really keeps their attention & helps them remember.

When my boys get around 3rd grade I will look into Switched On Schoolhouse http://www.aophomeschooling.com/switched-on-schoolhouse/overview.php It is an computer based curriculum that I have heard GREAT things about. & what could be easier than the computer doing the teaching for you??? It doesn't start until 3rd grade though. Younger ones need more one on one mommy teaching.

Unit studies are really cool to do. They can be done in a variety of subjects, with a variety of ages at one time. For example if you did a unit study on gardening in the spring, all of your kids could be involved in growing a garden. You could have math by counting rows & seeds...spelling by spelling out garden terms or names of veggies. Science by studying what the veggies are made of.

There are endless subjects you could study with unit studies. I'd like to do a weather one in a few years. You can read about unit studies on the cathy duffy homeschool review site mentioned above.

On January 12 we had our 2nd trip to the Oklahoma Science Museum, but this time it was with our homeschool group. We had a great time & here are a few pictures. The picture of Joshua with headphones on, captured a moment I will never forget. I laughed my head off as they rode inside a space capsule with hidden cameras capturing the frightened look on their faces. The capsule tilted backwards & the lady manning the operation was able to talk to them inside via a speaker. She was saying the funniest things to the boys who took it very seriously.

Frog & Toad books

My children LOVE Frog & Toad books. They are at the perfect ages (4 &6) to really enjoy stories read to them. To be honest I was begining to worry b/c they have never been big on sitting & listening to me read books.....until now. I read 3 books every school day to them plus their Bible reading & they are starting to eat it up! Anyways, Frog & Toad books are their favorite & I encourage you to check them out if you have never read them. They were first published in the 70's I think so they've been around for a while.

Here is a description of them from Wikipedia:

"Frog & Toad are the main characters in a series of easy-reader children's books, written and illustrated by Arnold Lobel.

Each book contains five simple, often humorous, sometimes poignant, short stories chronicling the exploits of a frog and his friend, a toad, simply named Frog and Toad. Some of their adventures include: attempting to fly a kite, cleaning Toad's messy house as opposed to waiting until "Tomorrow" to do so, and pondering the ethics of being "Alone"."

I briefly mentioned this in a prior post but wanted to explain it further & share the link with you.

Here in Oklahoma we have the BEST homeschool rights & laws. As far as I understand I do not have to keep track of things at least while they are in the elementary years. Nevertheless, I find it very motivating & helpful to do so.

This free homeschool tracker has several features I'm loving. Here are a few:

*It allows you with the click of a mouse to track on a calender if your child was "present" for school that day or sick. This will keep track of how many hours we put in each year.

*It has a reading log where you can log every book you read with your children. A neat option is to tag the book "unfinished" which is helpful for a large book that you will read over time. You can log that you read from it that day, but it will keep it in an unfinished catagory until you complete it.

*It has a field trip journal that allows you to post the dates & places you go for educational field trips. How fun it will be to look back over the years & see the places we visited!

If your state requires intense record keeping you can purchase more involved trackers from this site, but for my purposes the free works well. Here is the link. Choose to download the basic edition to get the free one.

Friday Family Fun Night!!!

We started a new "tradition" this year called Friday Family Fun Night. I wanted to share it with you because it has been such a huge hit with us. Whomever's turn it is that night gets to pick the evening meal, dessert, 2 games (either 2 board games or 1 board game & 1 Wii game that all 4 of us can play) & a movie for the family to watch together.

All of us earnestly look forward to Fridays & the time we share having fun & celebrating our family. This Friday happens to be my turn & I already know what I want the dinner to be....Jonathan's lasagna!!!!

Homeschool Update

Well, I am very badly behind on this blog, but it's never too late for an update, right? It has been a happy, full fall & now winter. Joshua turned 6 in November & I cannot believe I have not posted his birthday party yet. I hope I will get motivated to get back into blogging regularly. I enjoy it when I do ; )

Joshua had a good fall semester of kindergarten. He particularly excelled in math. He quickly finished up MathUSee's Primer book that probably should have taken the whole year to do, but I didn't want to deny his strong hunger to plug along.

I am very impressed with MathUSee & the way they explain math concepts. I even learned some things that I didn't understand all these years ; )

We stayed very busy with our local homeschool group this fall & enjoyed our time hanging out with friends & going to Praise & Move choir.

We started our Spring semester of school the first week in January. We are doing Horizon's K math & Horizon's K phonics. I am very pleased with their curriculum as well. It is my 2nd choice for math behind MathUSee, but my first choice for phonics so far & trust me....I've tried several things I didn't like. There are 4 books in the K phonics & I'm hoping very much that he will be reading by the end of them.

A friend recently told me about a free downloadable "Homeschool Tracker" that tracks attendance, books read, field trips, sick days & much more. I'm enjoying using it & recommend it to all.

I am such a no-fuss type homeschool mom. I like things to be laid out & clear cut...not overly creative & abstract. I don't like that about myself, but I get very cranky when I pressure myself into doing those creative things I'm not comfortable doing. My poor kids!

Braeden is growing like a tower & has slightly edged above Joshua now in height. He is still skinnier than Josh though so they still weigh about the same. Brae's favorite thing to do right now is ride his new bike (with training wheels) & listen to his ipod. He took after Jonathan in his intense love of music. KJ-52, Toby Mac, Jared Anderson, Hillsong Kids & Brandon Heath are a few of his favorites. He especially likes Christian hip-hop & can dance well like his daddy, auntie, both Granmothers & his cousin Alex. Brae still loves any type of art & craft activity & gets that from my mom & cousin Alex. I would LOVE to put him in an art camp someday b/c the good Lord knows he isn't getting good art instruction at home!!!

We just celebrated our first Feast of Trumpets Biblical holiday. We ate a candle light feast of yummy food, daddy read the Bible & taught how the Feast of Trumpets is a foreshadowing of the return of Jesus Christ & we listened to the sound of a shofar blowing. To be honest, I don't know why more Christians don't celebrate this holiday? It is a great teaching tool & reminder of our blessed hope! I encourage you to try it next year...it's a blessing.

I picked up these two Reading Comprehension spinners at Mardel Christian Stores. The theme of one is "Tell Me About It" & it has the following prompts you can land on:

*Tell about a similar incident that happened to you.

*Give the book a new title. Tell why you chose it.

*What part of the story would you change? Explain why.

*Retell the story.

*Tell about 3 events from the story.

*Why do you think the author ended the story that way?

The other theme is "Story Elements" & has these prompts:

*What was the solution?

*What are the problems or conflicts?

*What is the main idea of the story?

*Who are the main characters?

*Where does the story take place?

*How did the story end?

I plan to use these tools to encourage the boys to really pay attention to the story & learn how to pick up on themes & details. They will be rewarded a point for each question they get correct...one spin/question per story time reading. At the end of the book they will get to cash in their points for a special surprise outing of mom & dad's picking. It would be neat if the outing could correlate somehow to the theme of the book we just read. For example when we finish Little House in The Big Woods we could take a trip to a pioneer museum.

We had a GREAT first day of "school" today. It went very smoothly & I love our schedule. We wake up & I cook breakfast (whatever is on my 2 week menu plan). After eating we read the Bible, pray & I bless them at the kitchen table. After clearing off the table we get dressed, brush teeth & make their beds.

Now we're ready for school work. Josh & I do Math U See, Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons, more Bible, Handwriting, & sight words. Braeden is free to watch a movie or play quietly while I'm working with Josh.

When Josh & I are finished I do whatever preschool activities Braeden wants to do. Today we did a numbers dot to dot & file folder alphabet activity. After this they took turns doing a computer educational software activity. Then we did animal chores (collecting eggs, feeding & watering dogs & cats) & got ready for lunch.

Each day I will have a "helper" to come along side me in training. They will take turns having a day. My helper will help me with cooking, cleaning, animal chores, etc. The goal is for them to be able to eventually work independently & diligently on a number of tasks. After lunch I read out of a chapter book (we're doing Little House in The Big Woods first) & they take a turn spinning a question wheel to help with reading comprehension. I will feature these doodaddys in another post...they are fabulous!!!

After our reading time they have one hour of "rest time". During this time I have them stay on their beds either looking at books, sleeping or playing quietly with toys. I play a music or story cd during this time. Momma uses this hour to do whatever she wants or needs to do (like blogging ; ) )

From 3-5 on Monday-Friday I have alloted time for the boys to play video games. Yes, we let ours play video games....gasp! One of my boys will use up the whole 2 hours while the other will probably only last 30 mins.

I'm sure there will be tweaking all the time to what we do & when we do it, but this is a great start to a long & blessed journey. I'm so glad I'm being obedient to His call to homeschool. I know it will be worth it all. I cherish all the time I get to spend with them each day. Thank you Jesus!

We had a wonderful vacation & are already looking forward to hopefully going next year. The in-laws already have reservations for next year as they go yearly. I am officially a "beach bum" now. The first year we went ('07) I had a great time but was skeptical about how someone could base their whole vacation on doing nothing on the beach. Well, that was then....now I'm hooked. Prepare & Pray Unit Study

This is the neatest homeschool unit study I've ever seen!

It is a family preparedness unit study based on the novel "Swiss Family Robinson". How fun & innovative is that?

I'm excited that my sons will be learning things like: how to make rope, shelters, find food etc. It will be like a family version of the boys scouts. I'm counting on daddy to be the main leader of this unit study. Mom is not the biggest outdoors adventurer that ever lived ; )

I look forward to sharing our learnings as we go through this. The lessons will probably be spread out over a few years.

Burnout.

In my ten-plus years of experience, I think I have met only one homeschooler
who claimed to never struggle with it. Whether burnout occurs as a result of
financial stress, major life change, marital struggles, difficulties with a
child, or just plain old exhaustion, most of us are bound to encounter
burnout at some point in our homeschooling journey. The question isn't
whether we will face burnout, but rather what we can do about it when we do.

Below are ten "Burnout Busters" I have found helpful to me at different
points along my homeschooling journey:

*1. Don't subscribe to the dangerous "grass is greener" syndrome.*

If you have a friend whose kids are in school and you find yourself envying
her freedom, read the verse I included at the beginning of this article.
These are the times when we must keep our focus on God and on His calling on
our lives, not looking to the right or the left. Instead of lamenting your
lot in life, focus instead on the benefits of the life you have. Don't
circle past the local public school and cast longing glances. Don't ask your
kids what they would think about going to school. This is a slippery slope
that leads to a declining attitude and much lost ground in the end. When
this thought pattern invades your mind, this is the time to ramp up your
prayer life and find another homeschool mom to encourage you--even if that
is just a blogger who encourages you through her written words. I know I
have several blogs I read to encourage me via the miracle of the Internet.

*2. Bookend each day with prayer.*

Greet the day with a "Hello, Lord, what do you have for me and my children
this day?" Living a life that looks for God's activity and His answers leads
to the life of abundance that Jesus spoke of in John 10:10. End the day with
a time of praise for what He did in your lives, as well as asking for any
needs that arose during the day.

*3. Each day after school is over, spend a few minutes assessing the day and
planning for the next. *This is a good time for reflection and preparation
while the day is still fresh on your mind. What went wrong? What went right?
What needs to be done differently? You can keep a journal and jot notes in
it each day--which books to look for at the library, craft ideas you want to
try, and any moments you want to remember from your day.

*4. Open several Bibles around the house so that you can glean from the Word
as you go about your day. *Keep your mind fixed on Truth, so that lies have
no place in your thought life. You can also write Scripture on index cards
and post them around your home. (Don't forget about the kitchen, your
bedroom, the bathroom, and the school area.) Write down any verses that
ministered to you when you first began homeschooling. * *

*5. Work toward establishing order in your life. *

If you are struggling with disorganization and a messy house, that can add
to the feeling of being overwhelmed. Consider purchasing a book on
organization to help you if this is an area you struggle with. I love *The
Complete Guide to Getting and Staying Organized* by homeschooling mom Karen
Ehman. Take time off from schoolwork and designate a week (or two if
necessary) to get your home in order. Involve your kids; this is
all-important life skill training!

*6. Create a rhythm to your day.*

I am not advocating a strict schedule unless you think that would work for
you. For me, just a fluid rhythm to my day where both my children and I know
what to expect is good. This includes time for meals, rest, and play, as
well as school.

**

*7. Take a few minutes to plan your meals.*

This might sound silly, but it will go a long way toward helping you feel
more on top of your day. There is something about already knowing what's for
dinner that makes the day feel more do-able! I work on my meal plans on the
weekend, posting my list on a write-on/wipe- off board on my refrigerator. I
also do my shopping during the weekend so that all the ingredients I will
need are in the house for the week. This is a big time saver during the week
and is definitely worth the effort I put forth on the weekend when I don't
have schooling responsibilities.

*8. Get outside.* Go for a walk. Go to a park. Look for bugs and rocks and
leaves. If you want to make it educational, then use a guide to identify
what you find and let your kids take turns sketching these things--or just
take a photo and keep an inexpensive photo album of your findings. Getting
outside and appreciating God's vast creation never fails to give me a fresh
perspective and a renewed energy level. If nothing else, just carry a
blanket out to your backyard and do schoolwork outside, or read aloud on the
deck, patio, or in the hammock!

*9. Take time to be alone.* It's okay to need, as one friend put it, "just a
few hours where nobody calls me Mama!" from time to time. I like to have a
nice leisurely lunch all by myself with just a good book for company. Or
join other homeschooling moms at my church group's moms' night out. Or
venture to a bookstore with my planning notebook for some time to plan and
read and pray over what we are doing for school.

*10. Don't forget to laugh!* Don't be so teacher-oriented that you forget
that you are first and foremost a mom. Enjoy your kids. Laugh when they say
funny things. Make jokes and be silly. Appreciate the sheer joy that can be
found just by looking into their eyes and hearing the sweet things they say.
Recently I wrote across the top of my goals for this year: "Be joyful!
Motherhood is a gift, not a burden!" Why is it that sometimes I forget that
simple truth? *"He maketh the barren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful
mother of children. Praise ye the Lord." Psalm 113:9*My hope is that some of
these ideas will infuse you with new life, new perspective, and new hope for
your homeschool!

My son Braeden today publicly confessed that he wants to follow Jesus & needs Him because he is a sinner. He desires to follow Him in believers baptism out of obedience & to follow Jesus example.

God has now answered the top 2 prayers of my life! Wow! I'm so grateful to Him & continue to give my children to Him & strive to raise little warriors for Jesus. God's hand is on their lives & their hearts are tender for Jesus.

Now my prayer for them is that they will never take lightly the call on their life to be surrendered to Jesus. There is no room for lightweight, wimpy Christians. We are close to a time of Christian persecution here in America. May my sons not only be willing to die for Jesus, but LIVE for Him.....which in many ways is harder to do.

In The Meantime

In the fall we will start our "official" first day of homeschool! Joshua will be nearly six & ready to tackle kindergarten. Being a natural planner I am enjoying pondering the things I want him to learn his first year. One of my biggest goals is teaching him to read. He has already been exposed to phonics quite a bit & can read a few little words. JumpStart Phonics Reading & Rhyme is a computer game that he has enjoyed playing & learning with. I do recomend it if you don't mind your little one using your computer : ) And I've done some lessons with him from Teach Your Child To Read in 100 Easy Lessons. I will start that over & do it consistently when school starts.

Bible, Reading, & Math will be his main subjects, but we will be doing & learning various other things through unit studies. I'd like to do a garden unit study in the spring & throw in some weather studies for a bit of science fun. We'll also do a weekly nature journal. There are some life skills & chores I would like to train them how to do as well. For example I'm going to have them start helping with the watering & animal care including the chicken pen cleaning.

I can't wait to start, but in the meantime we are going to have a memoriable summer!

The boys enjoyed Vacation Bible School at their Grandaddy's church in town last week & will get another dose of it the week after the 4th of July at our church.

We will be in Florida at the beach for two weeks in August for my sister-in-law's wedding. We're all counting down the days for that as you can imagine.

Just A Little Longer

This is a poem I wrote for a friend who delivered a baby boy named Perry at around 20 weeks old. He lived a little while & then went to be with Jesus.

I dedicate this to all the families that have lost a baby or child. Remember that in just a little while........if you are in Christ you will be reunited with that little one.

I'm looking forward to meeting six of my own soon! What a blessed hope we have in Christ!!!

Let's Do A Little Preparation!

Has the Lord been nudging your spirit that it might be a good idea to prepare a little for hard times?

If so, you are not alone.

I know spirit-filled believers by the scores that are being led to do things they didn't 5 years ago. Even unbelievers are considering the times.

Is it Biblical to prepare for famine, rough economy or natural disasters? Yep. The preparation that Joseph did saved many lives from starvation. Also, Proverbs makes no bones that it is wise to prepare.

Does that mean you aren't trusting or having enough faith in God that He'll take care of you? I don't believe so. In fact it could be seen as a lack of faith to not prepare...especially if God's nudged your heart to do so. Just obey!

Oh the naysayers will call you radical & paranoid. But that's okay.

The truth is anything we do on this earth can be destroyed by rust or moth including our efforts to "prepare". I don't put my trust & hope in anything I can stock up on. But that doesn't mean I can't stock up & prepare WHILE trusting only in Him & His provision. You can do both....at the same time!

Here is a list that has some ideas of things that might be nice to have on hand pretty soon. We may not have adequate warning to rush out & gather supplies before the storm hits. Now is the time to prepare. Be wise in any prep you do. Buy only foods that you will eat now & ROTATE them so that it doesn't go bad if the crisis is delayed.

I'm thankful that my heart is safe with him. He is a faithful, honest man.

Weigh In Monday - Keepin' it Real!

I have good news & bad news. Which would you like first?

Okay, I think I'll give you the bad news first so we can end on a positive note.

Bad news: I only lost .2 lbs. Yes that's a point two....not a two! LOL!

Good news: I have LOVED my 7:00 rising schedule & want it to be permanent. I use it to fellowship with the Lord & walk. I've been walking an hour every morning.

This will be my last Monday weigh in. I know it was very short lived, but I think my heart is just not in it as far as the dieting part.

I'm content & happy which is more important than being a smaller size. I'm a good size & I need to accept that!

The Gentle Ways of The Beautiful Woman

I'd like to recommend a book to my readers that is hands down one of the most influential books I have read. For sure top 3! It's called The Gentle Ways of The Beautiful Woman by Anne Ortlund. This book was written in the late 70's - early 80's & has stood the test of time as a true classic.

One of my favorite chapters is called "Your Notebook". Anne suggests doing as she does & carrying a 7'' x 9'', three-ringed notebook that holds paper 5 1/2 '' x 8 1/2 ''. The idea is to carry the notebook with you as faithful as your purse so that you're never unprepared. The goal is organization. At the bottom of this product page is the notebook that Anne's website Renewal Ministries sells. You can order theirs or search for one @ Wal-Mart & create your own.

I gained a pound!

***Obviously I did not do well @ all with my diet or workouts. In fact, I was EXTRA bad!!! Soooo I'm starting over***

I began a new schedule this week that should....um WILL help my efforts. I'm getting my rear in gear by getting my rear out of bed @ 7:00 am each morning. This will be wonderful for many areas of my life. First thing I'll do is get the coffee going & read the Word for about 15 mins. Then I'm going to hop on the treadmill for either a 2 mile run or 1 hour walk & pray. The treadmill is a fabulous time to pray & talk to Jesus! You should try it.

Two of those days I will spinning on the spin bike instead of doing the treadmill. Also on the days I walk I'm going to try listening to the Bible on DVD. It's like Bible on tape/cd only it's on the screen of your tv too.

For those of you like me who're new to this type of craziness (combining prayer/the Word/exercise) ...it's called multitasking....knocking out two birds with one stone, or three in this case.

I read the following words (a portion of an article) written by Daniel Eggers. The things going on in our nation & world right now are possibly a direct fulfillment of prophecy. It's surreal to see these events unfolding in front of our eyes. If these are not the direct fulfillments, they are setting things up for direct fulfillments. We're getting closer, ya'll! Are we really THE generation.....the last generation??? We might very well be!

The good thing??? I'm sold out to Him! My heart rises up to PRAISE my Savior & the creator of this universe!!! He is worthy of our respect & honor & praise. He is in control of the times & none of these things take Him by suprise. He can soften or harden kings & mens hearts.

My faith has never been stronger. This is a good time to study the scriptures & the mighty men & women of faith written about in Hebrews 11. I want to follow in the footsteps of our faithful fathers, especially our faithful Jesus who was obedient even unto death to the will of the Father.

Are you ready for persecution? Would you lay down your life or go to jail because you refuse to go against the truth of God's Word? My husband tells his congregation regularly that he WILL go to jail before he stops preaching truth. He will still call sin sin & if that is considered a hate-crime by a godless government so be it. Bring it....our God is mighty to save!

Here is what is going on that you need to be aware of:

"Soon, on June 4th, our current leader will make an address to the Muslim world from Cairo Egypt. From this city he will lay out his peace incentive for the nation of Israel. His words, the state of his heart, and intentions found in both will be enough to tear America in two. Monday Weigh In

Today is the official "start" of my weight loss challenge. I weighed in at 126 1/2 lbs. That's less than I thought I weighed which is great, but I'll still shoot for a 10 lb loss.

Now some of you are probably thinking....oh poor baby, she weighs 126! Well, I know that's not overweight, BUT I have a pretty small frame & am only 5'3'' sooooooooooooo I could stand to loose those 10......especially for a beach vacation.

I'm a little concerned about my start today however for 2 reasons.

#1 I have a super sore heal. It feels like I bruised it & I could barely walk yesterday. It is less painful today, but still not sure if I can do the workout. We'll see.

#2 My cousin from Colorado is coming for a visit this evening & these kind of situations lend themselves to OVEREATING. She & her husband are vegetarians so I am cooking tortilla soup, loaded guacamole, championship bean dip, chips & of course dessert. Cheer me on that I'll eat moderate portions!

I will check back in next Monday for another weigh in to see how this week's calorie counting & workouts have worked.....or not worked. ; )

A Letter From A Birthmother

I got permission from Joshua's Birthmother Randi to share this letter she wrote my husband & I. She's an amazing woman that has a tender heart full of faith towards God. We have a very special loving relationship with her to this day. One of the most rewarding moments of my life is telling her a few months ago that Joshua had received Christ as his Savior.

Today my handy man & I painted the cherry wood hutch in the boy's room a slate grey color to match a stripe in the throw on their bed. It has a slight Pottery Barn feel to it, no?

Kids Who Survived The 30's - 70's

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE

1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

F first, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, nobooster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tire s and sometimes no brakes

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid made with real white sugar. And, we weren't overweight. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running into the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations,Nintendo's and X-boxes. There were no video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no person al computers, no Internet and no chat rooms
WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made f room dirt, and the worms did not live in us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them..

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all.
If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

You might want to share this with others who have had the luck to grow up as kids, before the lawyers and the government regulated so much of our lives for our own good.

While you are at it, forward it to your kids so they will know how brave and lucky their parents were.

Kind of makes you want to run through the house with scissors, doesn't it ?

Diet Ticker ~ Monday Weigh-ins

My friend (you know who you are) is starting a Monday weigh-in for weight loss accountability on her blog. I'd love to loose 10 pounds by August for our trip to Florida so I decided to join her & will do the same on my blog. My sister-in-law is getting married on the beach! My husband is preaching the wedding & I'm a bridesmaid.

Sooooo, I'm going to "weigh-in" each Monday to track my progress. Feel free to join me if you have a weight loss goal of your own. We can be accountability buds ; )

Here is my simple weight loss plan....so easy a cavewoman could do it. Only this cavewoman loves....& I mean adores food....especially rich calorie-laden food : ( Surely I can do this for just a few months!!!

1500 calories/ day on the weekdays

1500-2000 calories/ day on weekend (Sat & Sun)

Run 2 miles on treadmill 3 x week

Ride spin bike 20 mins 2 x week

Angry Letter To God

The first letter I will share is one that I wrote to God at my breaking point. I am not proud of the bitterness that I felt & I know others who have reacted much more gracefully than I about infertility. I'm thankful that my Jesus didn't give up on me & turn away from me although I threw fits on him & accused Him of unfairness. He knew my heart & I knew I couldn't hide those feelings from Him anyways. At this point obviously I didn't know the plan God had for us to adopt Joshua.

There is a peace in sharing & joy in knowing that God can use my story....our story....our amazing adoption story. I pray that these letters give Him glory because He orchestrated the whole thing. 55 Years of Greatness ~ My Daddy

I know that every daughter with a good daddy thinks theirs is the best, & I'm no exception. My daddy has been the biggest encourager of my life. He has always made me feel loved & cherished. From my earliest memories, he read the Bible & prayed with me every night & "packed me" in my bed (tucked me in). He has always said, "out of all the daughters in the world, I'd pick you" & I knew he meant it. Many times he has left notes for me to find expressing his love. Above is a note he sent me when I was away at college. This photo tribute is to my daddy on his 55th birthday. He has a place in my heart that is super special & always will.

Love Language

Sure, my kids are only 4 & 5, but I have their love language pegged!

Braeden, my 4 year old's is "touch" & "acts of service". He is a lap baby that loves to cuddle & be touched. He always wants me to do something for him. He still would rather me put his socks on his feet than dress himself. Not the most independent person ever, but you gotta love him ; )

Joshua, my 5 year old's is "words of affirmation" & "companionship". Words can put a light in his eyes & joy on his face. He loves, loves, loves for someone to watch him play a video game or to play with him. He is an irresistable optimist that I love to be around. You can't not love this little cutie....even when he wakes up loud & cheerful in the morning ; )

Being mindful of their love language helps me show them love & fill up their love bank.

Preparing The House & Homeschool Organizing

Hey, check out Shannon's blog. She explains an organizational system that she has started using with her children's homeschool & it sounds so wonderful that we are going to do it as well. I think my boys will love seeing the progress of their day & know exactly what they are doing next. Mom is going to love it too. At night when they go to bed I will be handing out activities, directions, lessons & projects into the buckets. And just like children on Christmas morning they will leap out of bed in the morning to see what neat things they get to do that day.

Tag Reading System

My kid's LOVE their tag reading system. My four year old got it for his birthday in April & he & his brother have fought over it ever since. We finally broke down & got another from Wal-Mart because it is a great educational tool & we felt like we could justify the purchase. I can't recomend this "toy" enough if you have a 4 - 7 year old.

Newest Raised Bed Garden & The Permanent Chicken Yard

My husband & I have now completed raised bed garden #2. The goal is 3 total this year. If you recall I have onions (red & white), garlic & cucumbers in bed #1. My new bed has 2 roma tomato plants, 2 jalapeno plants, sage, cilantro & rosemary. I am looking for a sweet basil plant to complete it. YUMMY! Spring is my favorite time of the year.

Also, we have "the girls" moved into their permanant pen & they love it. We have a few more loose ends to tie up on it that will ensure more predator resistance. We have our lawn chairs facing the chickens as they provide endless entertainment....those goofy birds!
